Healthy teeth love a colourful balanced diet.

To give your little one a smiling start, focus on eating a balanced diet that's low in sugar.

This means skipping sugary snacks and drinks, including natural sugars, like honey and fruit juices. Instead, offer a variety of foods from all food groups, such as vegetables, fruits, grains like bread and pasta, and proteins like lean meats and legumes.

From the age of 12 months, kids can join in on family meals, enjoying the same nutritious foods served on their own plates. Just remember, for children under 2, stick with full-fat dairy options to support their strong teeth and bones.

For a happy, healthy smile, it's best to keep certain treats to a minimum. Try to cut back on sweetened breakfast cereals, sugary fruit bars, and high-sugar muesli bars. Also, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, lollies and sweets are better enjoyed occasionally.

Opt for less jam, honey, and hazelnut spread on their toast. When it comes to savoury snacks, try to reduce hot chips, crisps, meat pies, and sausage rolls.

Lastly, swap out ice cream, dairy desserts, fruit juices, cordials, and soft drinks with healthier alternatives.

These small changes can make a big difference in keeping your child's teeth strong and healthy.
